Bring your own key (BYO)

Connect your Google Gemini API key to WireLang™ to translate using your own Google quota. Google bills your project directly at cost with no markup from us. BYO mode includes an initial trial allowance; once that allowance is reached, a Pro subscription is required to continue in BYO mode.

1

Open Google AI Studio

Go to aistudio.google.comand sign in with any Google account (a regular Gmail account works fine).

2

Create an API key

Click Get API key in the left sidebar, thenCreate API key. If prompted for a project, you can accept the default project created by Google.

3

Copy the key

The key looks like AIzaSy… (a long string of letters and numbers). Click the copy button next to it.

  • Keep the key confidential, as anyone with the key can consume your quota.
  • You can delete it and create a new one at any time from the same page.
4

Paste it into WireLang™ Settings

Open the WireLang™ settings (click the gear icon in the app), select theBYO Key tab, paste the key into the input field, and press Save Key. Your plan badge switches to BYO and the field shows only the last few characters of your key from then on.

5

Translate

Sessions now run using your key, and the floating toolbox displays elapsed time instead of remaining credits. You can disconnect the key at any time to return to WireLang credits.

Key security: Your key is transmitted over HTTPS, encrypted on our servers using AES-256-GCM, and is never displayed again in full. WireLang exchanges the key server-side for short-lived session tokens, preventing the raw key from ever being exposed to your browser during translation sessions.

Usage costs: Google bills your key directly with no added markup from WireLang. While Google provides a free tier for light testing, free-tier terms allow Google to log data to improve its models, and its rate limits may interrupt extended sessions. For private use and consistent stability, consider enabling billing on your Google Cloud project. Live translation typically costs between $2.50 and $3.50 per hour of active audio under Google's published Gemini Live token pricing, and paid-tier data is not used for model training.

Regional requirements (EEA, UK, Switzerland): Google requires the Gemini API to run under a billing-enabled Google Cloud project in these regions. Free-tier keys are unavailable there per Google's Gemini API Terms.
